  • 1534 > On Low Sunday. More attends mass at Saint Paul's Cathedral, then visits John Clement and Margaret Gigs in his former house of Bucklersbury. It is there that he is summoned for the next day to sign the " Act of succession ". He returns to Chelsea for the night. On the 13th, having attended mass and received Holy Communion, More, escorted by William Roper, arrives early at Lambeth Palace, where he is the only layman summoned. He refuses the oath to the " Act " because of the schismatic preamble. He is put under house arrest at Westminster Abbey. On the 17th, after another refusal, he is led to the Tower of London by Richard Cromwell, nephew of the " Secretary " and great-grandfather of the " Protector ". He informs his near ones with a brief note, then a long letter addressed to his daughter Margaret Roper
